Heritage and character are often used interchangeably, but they have different meanings under Brisbane City Plan. A heritage-listed property is protected for its cultural or historical significance. A character home is recognised for how its design, materials and position contribute to the traditional appearance of its street or neighbourhood. Many Queenslanders are character homes without being formally heritage-listed. Your property’s overlays, construction date and proposed work will determine which planning requirements apply.
